Winning Generation

2010 to 2011

Project Overview

The Winning Generation project, implemented by Sikizana Trust for Community Development in Mtito Andei Division, aimed to empower young people with knowledge and skills to promote positive health behaviors and reduce risky practices related to HIV/AIDS.

Outcomes Achieved

  • Peer Educator Training: Successfully trained 26 peer educators (11 male, 15 female) in Behavior Change Communication (BCC), covering HIV/AIDS prevention, stigma reduction, gender equality, and human rights. The training was officially recognized with certificates issued by the District Officer, enhancing project visibility.

  • Community Outreach: Conducted a major outreach event during the District Officer’s baraza, reaching approximately 1,000 community members (250 male, 750 female). Peer educators effectively disseminated HIV/AIDS prevention messages and promoted positive health practices.

  • Youth Mobilization: Engaged youth through sports clubs and community groups, registering 12 sports clubs—exceeding initial expectations—demonstrating strong community interest and participation.

  • Behavioral Impact: Participants reported increased understanding and application of HIV prevention strategies. Notably, peer educators like Onesmus and Doris shared personal testimonies of how the training influenced their advocacy and family discussions.

Challenges Encountered

  • Funding delays impacted the timely execution of planned activities.

  • Budget overruns occurred due to higher costs of IEC materials.

  • Weather disruptions affected training attendance, though demand remained high.

Lessons Learned

  • Government involvement in certificate issuance significantly boosted project credibility and outreach.

  • Youth-led initiatives through sports and community groups are effective for mobilization.

  • There is a clear need for couple-focused training to address family-centered HIV prevention.

Conclusion

The Winning Generation project has made significant strides in building a healthier, more informed youth population in Mtito Andei Division. The outcomes demonstrate the value of participatory approaches, government collaboration, and targeted training in HIV/AIDS prevention. Sikizana Trust remains committed to sustaining these gains and expanding outreach in future initiatives.

Sikizana Trust for Community Development thanks all partners, participants, and community members for their support and engagement throughout the project.
